Loving-Kindness (Metta)
A Buddhist-rooted practice of offering good wishes to yourself and others.
Metta (Pali for "loving-kindness") is a traditional Buddhist meditation, also widely taught in secular settings.
Steps
- Silently repeat phrases such as: May I be safe. May I be well. May I live with ease.
- Then offer the same wishes to someone you love, then to a neutral person, then — only if you feel ready — to someone difficult.
- End with: May all beings be safe, well and at ease.
Good to know
Feeling nothing is normal. The intention matters more than the emotion. You never need to offer wishes to someone who harmed you before you feel safe doing so.
