Healthy Boundaries
Clear, kind limits that protect your time, energy and wellbeing.
A boundary describes what you will do to take care of yourself; it is not a way to control another person.
Examples
- "I can't talk now. Can we speak tomorrow at six?"
- "I'm not comfortable discussing that. Let's change the subject."
- "If the shouting continues, I'll leave the room."
Tips
- Be short and clear. You don't owe long explanations.
- Expect some discomfort, especially at first; that does not mean you are wrong.
Safety
If you feel afraid of someone, or a relationship involves threats or violence, please contact local emergency services or a domestic-violence helpline rather than relying on boundaries alone.
