Self-Compassion Basics
Treating yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend.
Psychologist Kristin Neff describes self-compassion with three parts: self-kindness instead of harsh self-judgement, common humanity (knowing that struggle is part of being human), and mindfulness (noticing pain without exaggerating or ignoring it).
Self-compassion is not self-pity or lowering your standards. Research suggests it is linked with resilience and with being more willing to learn from mistakes.
A self-compassion break
- "This is a moment of difficulty."
- "Difficulty is part of life; I am not alone."
- "May I be kind to myself right now."
