Origin & cultural context
Chinese mythical traditions
The qilin is an auspicious mythical creature in Chinese art and traditions. Its appearance varies across depictions; this deer-shaped, scaled illustration is not a fixed historical model. The British Museum documents a Ming-dynasty qilin incense holder.
Not all figures here are benevolent guardians. Sacred beings, tricksters and complex myths are presented for cultural learning, not as interchangeable mascots. No ceremonial authority, restricted rites or supernatural guarantees are claimed.
